Martin House Children’s Hospice. ‘Charity Music Auction ’.2014

In the countdown to Leeds&Reading 2014, Martin House Children’s Hospice and Festival Republic present their second ‘Charity Music Auction’.

Acts, mainly from Leeds & Reading 2013, have very kindly signed various pieces of music memorabilia to raise money for the Yorkshire hospice. The likes of Biffy Clyro, Frank Turner, Jake Bugg and The Lumineers have given items such as signed vinyl, a signed guitar, signed Leeds Festival posters and a signed set list.

The bidding commences on the hospice’s eBay page on Friday 7^th February, with the items available to preview on the charity’s website from 4^th February. Through the power of social networking and media support, Martin House hope to attract significant support and interest, which in turn will raise the profile and awareness for the charity! The auction following 2012’s festivals raised a fantastic £5,000 and, as importantly, attracted a new audience to the charity.

This innovative way of fundraising is a result of Martin House’s strong relationship with Festival Republic, who have supported the hospice since 2004. Their connection later led to the inception of the Centre Stage fundraising music competition, for local under 21 year olds, where winning acts perform at both Leeds and Reading. Now in its fifth year, Martin House are currently accepting registrations.

The premise of the Centre Stage competition is to give young bands and artists a fantastic platform and exposure whilst raising vital funds for Martin House Children’s Hospice. Now in its fifth year, the competition has so far provided a platform for over 130 young, Yorkshire acts and raised £150,000 for the hospice. Centre Stage has the support of Embrace, The Pigeon Detectives, The Cribs, Pulled Apart by Horses and Festival Republic.

In order to enter, artists must be under 21 years old, in North or West Yorkshire, and be committed to undertake their own fundraising ventures for the hospice: the perfect example of young people helping young people.

Martin House Children’s Hospice: cares for over 300 children and young people, throughout Yorkshire, who have a life limiting illness. They support their families too, through the life of their child and through their bereavement, and are currently supporting 120 bereaved families, too. Martin House needs to raise almost £5m this year to run, receiving less than 12% from Government sources.

Friday Night @ Trinity Church, Leeds

Last Friday evening (29th November) Yorkshire Gig Guide attended an event held at Holy Trinity Church, Boar Lane, Leeds where we were entertained by solo artist Look Yonder, group Jacobean Ruff and headlining group Purple Emperors. This was the first time we have been to a performance at this venue and we enjoyed the whole experience. We were made very welcome even though we arrived somewhat early. It was well attended by a large number of young people who clearly enjoyed themselves too.

MARTIN HOUSE CHILDREN’S HOSPICE PRESENTS: CENTRE STAGE 2014

Registration for Centre Stage 2014 is now open and Martin House Children’s Hospice, together with Leeds & Reading Festivals, look forward to the new search for the act who will ultimately claim the prize of playing at next summer’s Leeds AND Reading Festivals, and a music performance video with Shot by Sodium.
The competition has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2009 and continues to receive involvement and support from Yorkshire bands Embrace, Pigeon Detectives, The Cribs and Pulled Apart by Horses. Now in its fifth year, the Centre Stage Competition, which raises vital funds for the hospice, is inviting young bands and soloists of ANY genre to enter. Participants must be between 11- 21 years old and from North or West Yorkshire. 

Over the coming months, registered acts will undertake their own fundraising for Martin House, who witness the therapeutic benefits of music first hand within the hospice. Once registered, acts will be automatically entered into the Heats, which will take place mid-late April (dates to be announced very shortly). Having been judged by a professional industry panel, the lucky finalists will take to the stage at O2 Academy, Leeds, on 23rd July, following a professional mentoring day.

The competition is just about to hit the big £150,000 mark in terms of funds raised, and all of this has been channeled directly into the care of the children and their families. Sponsorship for the year ahead has already been secured from National Breakdown and Blacks Solicitors, so Martin House are hoping that, with such support in place, CS2014 will take them close to the £200,000 mark.

Centre Stage 2013 was a great success and welcomed its first winning band from North Yorkshire, King No-One, who received an amazing reception at Leeds & Reading. The band have remained involved with the charity ever since: they even performed as 6,000 runners ran by at the Yorkshire Marathon last month, for which Martin House was a partner charity!

Almost all of the funds raised over the last year have now been received, and Centre Stage Organiser, Sarah Smith, confirms: “the total raised over the last year exceeds £45,000, and we still have some to come. We continue to be overwhelmed by the support we get, not just from the amazing contenders, but from key venues, companies and individuals, many of who volunteer their professional services, which makes the whole project possible.”

Previous winners ‘The Mexanines’ are reaping the benefits of the exposure that Centre Stage has given them as they are enjoying life on the road as the main support for the Pigeon Detectives on their current tour…. Could you now follow in their footsteps?

It’s not just about the main prize, it’s also about the platform and exposure acts receive and the fantastic prizes awarded, including a recording session with Sound People at Eiger Studio for the runners up in addition to rewards for ‘best fundraisers’ and ‘best door tallies’, but mostly it’s about YOUNG PEOPLE HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE!

Winston still Running- Review

arrives near you this is one not to miss. 

We were lucky enough to catch the performance in Leeds at The Cariageworks. This granted us a very pleasurable hour and a half in the company of Mr Freddie Machin as the young Winston Churchill at a time in his life which is not usually common knowledge. Young Winston is in a dark hole, on the run and on the edge of success or failure.

The minimal stage setting and sound effects were outstanding and the performance was brilliant.

The play was written by Freddie Machin and John Walton and was produced and directed by John Walton.

An added bonus was the question and answer session for half an hour following the performance explaining how the play came about and telling us something of the lives of those who created it.

Set, lighting and costume cleverly done by Martin Thomas. Music and sound brought the set to life by Harri Chambers.

We urge you to see this play. You will not be disappointed.
