A thoroughly entertaining night at The HUB in Leeds on Monday 18th February. The evening began with Beulah. Beulah is a story that explores how we understand time, space, dreams, reality and what happens after life. A beautiful, delicate folk tale which straddles the ocean between this world and the next. In the very intimate setting of Holbeck Hubs tiny theatre, two very talented young men - Jim Harbourne and Ryland Teifi - brought to life a short story with puppetry, music, song and clear spoken dialogue. There were minimal props and these were used to illustrate the play brilliantly. The music was composed by Jim Harbourne and Edward Wren and the play was written by Alexander Wright. Also voice overs by Jamie Shelton who played the young Liam and Serena Manteghi who played Lyca. The timing was superb and both the actors on stage showed an aptitude for a wide number of musical instruments. Under the direction of Tom Bellerby we were taken into 2 different time zones and to places and events which may at some times have seemed impossible.
The second play of the evening was Some Small Love Story. This was also written by Alexander Wright. The music in this play was by Gavin Whitworth and was directed by Noreen Kirshaw. This story also took us across some 60 years of time and space. It is a tale of love and sadness and was well performed by Samantha Siddall, Callum McArdle, Keir McEwen and Serena Manteghi. Again, a well directed piece which was well timed and clearly spoken and sung.
These are two productions well worth seeing. They are on at the HUB until the 20th February. The HUB is at 67-71 Bath Road, Holbeck, Leeds LS11 9UA
