Funky Five at the Woolpack, Almondbury- Review

Hot foot from strolling round Huddersfield’s Castle Hill with its Victorian monument and ancient settlement footprints, we found ourselves in the steep old streets of Almondbury. Andrew camera in hand, clicking one photo after another all worthy subjects for an album. The quaint seventeenth century buildings appeared to have grown into each other: from one such, the Woolpack Inn came the sound of a live band drifting through the walls and doorway.
Once inside the great atmosphere in this crowded full pub held us captive for hours. A nice glass of hand pulled beer, friendly staff and locals also helped. The party was in full swing and it was only four o’ clock. Music mostly by Funkyfive: I say mostly because the audience joined in full voice especially Ben and his dancing. Also vocalist Terri Horton who usually sings with Mary Jane stood in for the bands singer Jess.
The band delighted the audience with funky jazz and Motown soul one after the other which had the audience singing and dancing. Of course songs like Thriller require a good bass and Rich is your man. His technique on slap bass is awesome and he certainly drives the rhythms home. Russ offered a nice interplay to the percussive bass with funky guitaring and vocals.  Whilst Pete added the topping with his funky keyboard playing and Chris kept everyone in time with his rhythmic hypnotic drumming: the Woolpackers were not going anywhere while the band was playing.  The songs bounced along with the help of Terri’s husky voice. A lively singer who threw herself into each song giving every song impact and panache.
A great band, look out for Funkyfive for a funky fun night out!!
