In Seven Days Barnsley Will Show Its Acoustic Roots

The 2011 Barnsley Acoustic Roots Festival (BARF) starts in seven days time with performances by pupils from Kingstone School on Thursday 31 March. This is followed by the headline performance at The Civic by Show of Hands on Friday, and two days of incredible music from the UK and America on Saturday and Sunday

Tickets for the Show of Hands concert are selling quickly, so to avoid disappointment we would recommend that you book your tickets before the evening. The larger capacity at Kingstone School for events over the weekend, will mean that tickets will be available on the door.

Advance tickets are available from The Civic Box Office in person or at www.barnsleycivic.co.uk or on 0845 1800 363, lines are open Monday to Saturday 10am - 5pm and Sunday 10am - 4pm.

We are pleased to be able to offer concessionary tickets for concerts on Saturday and Sunday on the door. Under 16’s will be charged half price and under 5’s will be free.

Black Diamonds

Students from Kingstone School have been exploring traditional music, dance and story telling for over a month assisted by Maria Roberts and Ray Hearne. The students are currently putting the finishing touches to their show – Black Diamonds. The show will be performed to an invited audience from the local community and then on Thursday 31 March at 7.00pm it will open this year’s festival.
To see what the students have been doing visit the projects website (www.barfyr7.blogspot.com)

Tickets for the evening concert will be available on the door – with money raised used to funder further outreach work by BARF!

Open Mic

We are organising open mic sessions on Saturday and Sunday. The sessions will be a mixture of pre-booked spots and spots for people turning up on the day. The pre-booked slots have now been filled, including some acoustic performances from those appearing on the main stage, but there remain over 30 spots for musicians attending the festival.

The Saturday Open Mic session will start at 11.30am with auditions for the Seth Lakeman Rising Star Award, and on Sunday the session will start at 1.30. Sessions will end at 7.00, in time for the evening concerts. If you require more information contact Gerry McNeice at gerry@gerrymcneice.co.uk or on 07833 731864.

Rising Stars Award

Barnsley Acoustic Roots support the development of opportunities for young performers through its Rising Stars Award. Eight young performers have been invited to auditions from 11.00am on Saturday 2nd April, prior to the Open Mic Session. All the acts will perform a short set before judges who will select the overall winner and a number of runners up. The runners up will open the festival on Sunday afternoon, while the winner of the award will support Cara Dillon and be presented with the Seth Lakeman Trophy.

Please come along and support our rising stars!
